Ceruloplasmin (ferroxidase)

The CP gene encodes a metalloprotein, ceruloplasmin, which is the most importand cupper storage protein. It also catalyzes peroxidation of Fe(II)transferrin to Fe(III)transferrin. Mutations result in accumation of cupper in various tissues from which tissue damage ensues eventually. Depending on the nature of the mutation, allele dosage, and the degree of ceruloplasmin deficiency dominant or recessive disorders may ensue. As the enzyme is also involved in iron metabolism mutations may result in iron overload.
