Failure to thrive

Failure to thrive describes the observation of delayed development in children. It not only includes growth and weight gain but also neuromuscular and psychological aspects.

Clinical Findings

The diagnosis failure to thrive is rather an observation, a subjective symptom, which however can be measured objectively, growth an weight gain for instance.

Pathogenesis

The cause may be endogenous (mostly malabsorption) or exogenous hunger.

Diseases

Apparent mineralocorticoid excess
Failure to thrive is the result of excessive renal water and mineral losses due to polyuria.
